Doing business with Thailand might get difficult now that one of the Prime Ministers appointees includes someone on the sanctioned parties list.
Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra reshuffled her cabinet which resulted in 10 new appointments. One of the new appointments was given to Nalinee Taveesin who was given the title of Prime Ministers Office Minister.
Unfortunately, Ms. Taveesin allegedly was involved in various transactions with Grace Mugabe, the wife of Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe. This resulted in her being listed as a restricted party back in 2008.
Sanctioned parties list
A sanctioned parties list, also known as the SDN list, is maintained by the OFAC. The list contains names of individuals and companies owned or controlled by, or acting for or on behalf of, targeted countries. It also lists individuals, groups, and entities, such as terrorists and narcotics traffickers designated under programs that are not country-specific. Those that are on the list have their assets blocked and U.S. persons are generally prohibited from dealing with them.
the OFAC said that Ms. Taveesin had been involved in several financial, real estate and gem transactions on behalf of Grace Mugabe, the Zimbabwean president's wife.
Ms. Nalinee claim innocence
Ms. Nalinee claims that the US action as a big misunderstanding and “inconsequential” to her new role as a cabinet minister. She was originally introduced to the Mugabes in 2002 while they were on vacation in Thailand She said:
"I have never traded in gemstones. I have never brought diamonds in for sale. I am friends with the presidents of many countries. This is a case of guilt by association."
