WTO extends deadline for adoption of COOL requirements

The US, Canada, and Mexico requested an extension for the deadline to adoption or appeal of certain Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) Requirements (DS386).  The three countries requested that the Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) of the WTO to adopt draft decisions WT/DS384/11 and WT/DS386/10. They cited the “current workload of the Appellate Body,” and suggested that “the draft DSB decision, if adopted, would provide greater flexibility in scheduling any possible appeal of the panel report in this dispute, which was circulated to WTO Members on 18 November 2011.”

Deadline extended to March 23, 2012

Today, WTO extended the deadline to 23 March 2012. Without this extension, the COOL requirements would require adoption by 18 January 2012.

All parties involved agreed that decisions of this nature should be the exception to the rule.
